Why Calvin? After scholarships and financial aid, Calvin was cheaper than most other schools I applied to.

Fun story: My friends and I, freshman year, started a fun little tradition we called "Game Night" where we went to someone's dorm room and played games for a night together, and these nights were always some of the most fun and funny nights!

Why Calvin? I wanted a school with a close-knit community that felt like home to me. Calvin truly gave me that. Through my orientation group, dorm floor, class friends, caring professors, and clubs on campus, I was able to build community and find belonging at Calvin!

Major: mathematics

Campus Involvement: Ministry Leadership Cohort, Unmasked (peer listening app through the Center for Counseling and Wellness), Women in Computing, summer research, Ultimate Frisbee freshman/sophomore years, social racquetball and tennis, Grassroots (living-learning floor focused on justice and equity), EAPDI (student advisory group on diversity and inclusion), Food Recovery Network

Why Calvin? I was looking for a Christian liberal arts school that had respectable STEM research programs and a good international/multicultural percentage. I made the decision based on affordability and I felt an overwhelming divine peace when I received my acceptance letter to Calvin.

Fun story: At a dorm retreat at the end of September my freshman year, I was part of a lip-sync battle tradition. My floor was gifted the song "She Thinks my Tractor is Sexy" thanks to the Van Dellen guys. We had a lot of laughs and the choreo truly told a story!! I was a very shy freshman and the dorm retreat allowed me to participate without the awkwardness of small talk; plus, I finally learned how throw a football!

Haley Marco

Hometown: Sacramento, CA
Year: Senior
Major: mechanical engineering.
Minor: biotechnology
Campus Involvement: Society for Women Engineers, Dance Marathon, studied abroad in the Netherlands, Orientation Leader, Calvin Theatre Company, research, and I love rock climbing/bouldering, biking, and swimming in my free time.

Why Calvin? I chose Calvin because I heard of all the amazing opportunities and programs we offer here and almost instantly fell in love with Calvin’s dedication to the school mission and how students are truly encouraged to follow all their passions. When I applied for first year research in the biology department and was accepted, it was the “cherry on top” of one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!

Fun story: My favorite tradition at Calvin is what we call the Cold Knight Plunge, which is an event where we jump into the frozen-over seminary pond on campus. I’ve done it every year and it’s one of the scariest, most exhilarating things I’ve done at Calvin.

Hometown: Anderson, IN
Year: Freshman
Major: biochemistry (pre-medicine) Minor: Spanish

Campus involvement: varsity tennis, Honors Program (and living on Honors Floor), Social Events Team, Pre-Health Club, Running Club

Why Calvin? I desired four things and found them all at Calvin: a Christian institution that authentically integrated faith into every aspect of college life, excellent academics, being able to play tennis, and a tight-knit community.

Fun story: I had never pushed a mattress-on-wheels down the street…until I came to Calvin University. During the annual Bed Racing competition, groups of students compete to push rolling mattresses (with someone on top) down the main campus drive. Shopping for a mattress at the local Goodwill store and winning the best costume prize for our Mario Kart theme is my most cherished memory so far.

Fun story: In my freshman year I participated in the Cold Knight Plunge with three friends by jumping into the frigid seminary pond. Afterwards, the four of us changed into the fuzziest clothes and warmed ourselves with layers of blankets and toasty hot chocolate.
