Advice

I recommend that when looking for a school, you make a list of three nonnegotiable things that you must have in a university. This could be small class sizes, relationships with professors, placement rates, the right major, or certain activities you want to get involved with. When I was in high school, I was not quite sure what I wanted to study but I did know the kind of person I wanted to become. Community was a huge factor for me when selecting a school because the people you’re around 24/7 greatly impact the person you are shaped into.

Find a school that feels like home, but also challenges you & pushes you to try new things and get out of your comfort zone. Put yourself out there by joining clubs, getting involved with intramurals, and exploring the city.

Favorite Spot on Campus

My favorite place on campus is probably the seminary pond. There is plenty of lawn space surrounding the area, so it’s a great place to have a picnic with friends during the Fall and Spring. In the Winter, it becomes a fantastic place to ice skate with your friends, too.

Favorite Calvin Memory

It’s hard to choose one favorite moment from my time at Calvin. All through college I worked as a student tour guide and caller for the admissions department. The whole team became a family for me on campus. We created intramural volleyball teams, played wiffleball almost every Wednesday (weather permitting), and would eat together almost every day. Again, there’s not one moment that stands out, but rather a multitude of moments with wonderful people that really made my Calvin experience special.
